Felling a Tree

A field guide to directional tree felling.

Anyone can make a tree fall. Making it fall where you want is the whole craft, and it is almost entirely decided before the saw ever bites deep. A tree is a few tonnes of wood balanced over a single point. Your job is not to overpower it — it is to read which way it already wants to go, and then give it a hinge that steers it there.

Do this well and the tree lies down quietly along the line you picked. Do it carelessly and it kicks back, twists off the stump, or hangs up in the branches of its neighbour. The difference is a handful of cuts made in the right order.

Size up the tree first

Before you touch it, walk around the trunk and read three things.

From those three you choose a fall direction: ideally within about 45° of the way the tree already leans, into open ground, away from anything you care about.

Reading the lean properly

Hold a weight on a string against the trunk at eye level — a plumb line. Where the string hangs tells you the head lean (front-to-back) at a glance. Then move 90° around and read it again for side lean. Side lean is the sneaky one: it’s the reason a tree you aimed straight ahead can arrive a quarter-turn off, because as it drops the side lean rotates it around the hinge. Experienced fallers add a little extra hinge wood on the heavy side to hold against exactly that.

Clear your escape route

Decide where you will be when it goes over. The danger zone is not in front of the tree and it is not directly behind it — a falling trunk can slab off the stump and jump straight back. Pick two paths at roughly 45° behind the fall line, and clear them of anything you’d trip on. You want to be able to walk away without looking down.

Cut the notch

The notch (or face cut) is a wedge-shaped bite taken out of the side facing your chosen fall direction. It does two jobs: it points the tree, and it opens the space the tree will close as it goes over.

A sloppy notch that doesn’t meet cleanly at the back — a “bypass” — steers badly and can slam shut early. Take the time to make the two cuts meet.

Cut the back-cut and leave a hinge

Now move to the opposite side and cut horizontally toward the notch — but do not cut through to it. Stop while a band of solid wood still connects the two, a little above the level of the notch’s bottom cut.

That band is the hinge, and it is the most important wood on the whole tree. It is not holding the tree up by accident — it is steering. As the tree tips, the hinge bends and guides the trunk down along the notch’s aim, the way a door swings on its hinges. Cut all the way through and you have no steering at all; the tree drops wherever its weight takes it.

Leave the hinge roughly a tenth of the trunk’s diameter thick, even all the way across. As the back-cut opens, the tree commits, the hinge folds, and it goes over.

Why the hinge steers, and when it fails

The hinge works because wood is strong along the grain and weak across it. Intact fibres on the far side hold while the near side opens, so the trunk pivots instead of dropping. Common failures all come down to hinge geometry: cut it too thin and it snaps early, losing control; leave it too thick and the tree won’t release; make it uneven (thicker on one side) and the thick side holds longer, pulling the fall off to that side — sometimes deliberately, to correct for side lean, and sometimes by mistake. A bore cut (plunging the saw straight through the middle to form the hinge first, then releasing the back last) is how experienced fallers handle a heavy forward lean without the tree splitting or sitting back on the saw.

Retreat, then work the tree down

When the back-cut opens and the tree starts to move, stop cutting and walk your escape route. Don’t watch it go over from the stump. Once it’s down and settled, the standing tree becomes a log on the ground, and the work changes: limbing (taking the branches off) and bucking (cutting the trunk into usable lengths).

The whole thing in one line

Read where it wants to go, aim the notch there, leave a hinge to steer it, cut the back until it commits, and be somewhere else when it lands. Everything else is detail on top of those five moves.
